Colorectal cancer is common and largely preventable, yet screening remains underutilized—especially in underserved communities. Tobacco use, often overlooked, increases colorectal cancer risk, worsens outcomes, and contributes to health disparities. During Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, this session Dr Mosier will provide an overview on colorectal cancer risk, prevention, and current screening guidelines, including the importance of starting screening at age 45 and early detection. The session will explore the relationship between tobacco use and colorectal cancer, as well as opportunities to integrate tobacco cessation with colorectal and lung cancer screening efforts. Participants will examine the importance of coordinated prevention strategies, along with real-world challenges and practical solutions to improve engagement, reduce disparities, and strengthen cross-sector collaboration.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe current colorectal cancer screening guidelines and prevention strategies
  2. Explore how tobacco use is addressed in colorectal cancer prevention and its impact on outcomes and disparities.
  3. Share current approaches to integrating tobacco cessation with screening workflows across clinical and community settings.
  4. Discuss strategies to improve engagement and collaboration to increase screening and reduce disparities.
