About Sheena Turner-August

My name is Sheena M. Turner-August, Ph.D. and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Southern California and completed a terminal Master of Arts from Pepperdine University in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. I earned my Ph.D. from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University (APA Accredited) in the field of Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in the area of Multicultural Community Psychology. I specialize in working with teens and my areas of expertise include working with adolescents and their families as well as working with diverse populations and crisis stabilization. I also have expertise in working with individuals struggling with an addiction and/or a co-occurring disorder, have a history of trauma or have recently suffered a loss. In addition, I work with young adults in phase of life transitions and all individuals struggling with anxiety. I have over eight years of experience working in community mental health settings with adolescents and their families. I also have over four years of experience working with individuals that suffer from severe and pervasive mental illness in a variety of treatment settings, which include partial hospitalization and residential facilities. As a systems-oriented therapist, in working with adolescents, I find that it is important to work closely with their families as well as their schools. I employ psychodynamic theories and interventions in my work with families and individuals and I often integrate cognitive behavioral tools in my treatment planning to continue to support each of my clients in their growth. I am a member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT), the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT) and the American Psychological Association (APA). As a tenured professor in the Psychology Department at Las Positas Community College I enjoy teaching in the classroom and encouraging students to find their voice and platforms of advocacy. I am passionate about social justice, and believes that it is important to facilitate this, not only in the classroom, but also in all areas of my clinical work. I have over 10 years of experience teaching multicultural/diversity courses and recently developed the only diversity course at Las Positas College in the Psychology Department entitled Psychology of Race and Identity. In addition to continuing to conduct research, consult on the development of mental health programs and course development as well as serve as the Mental Health Coordinator for Las Positas College, I recently opened a nonprofit in Tracy to offer low-cost mental health services to the local community.
